(May 26, Tbilisi, Georgia)On May 27-28 Preliminary Dissemination Workshop on the National Research on Domestic Violence against Women in Georgia will be held at the Courtyard Marriott organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) country office in Georgia.

Nation-wide quantitative and qualitative research on domestic violence was conducted in 2008-2009 within the framework of the Norwegian Government and the UNFPA co-funded project “Combating Gender-Based Violence in the South Caucasus” in partnership with the ACT Research and the Centre for Social Sciences. This is the first initiative to generate nation-wide evidence-based results on the prevalence, causes and consequences of domestic violence in Georgia.

The Preliminary Dissemination Workshop aims at presenting and summarizing survey findings and elaborating relevant recommendations to inform the formulation and refinement of policies and action plans as well as advocacy and public awareness-raising campaigns on gender-based and domestic violence in Georgia.

On May 27th, at 12:50pm, within the framework of the conference, the presentation of the Collection of Normative Acts on Prevention of Domestic Violence, Protection and Assistance of Victims DV Victims in Georgia will be held. The publication, initiated by the State Inter-Agency Council on Domestic Violence and supported by the UNFPA/Georgia is a compilation of all normative acts regulating domestic violence issues in Georgia.

The conference will be attended by the Vice Speaker of the Parliament and Chairperson of the Gender Equality Advisory Council Rusudan Kervalishvili, Vice Speaker of the Parliament George Tsereteli, Deputy Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs Irakli Giorgobiani, Chair of the State Inter-agency Council on Domestic Violence Lali Papiashvili,   other representatives of parliament and government, international and non-governmental organizations and experts.

“Combating Gender-Based Violence in the South Caucasus” is a multi-pronged, 3 year project funded by the UNFPA and the Government of Norway contributing to the national response to gender-based violence in the three countries of the South Caucasus – Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
