On September 13-14 2009 training for Adjara-based journalists on “Gender and Gender Reporting” will be held at Intourist Hotel Palace, Batumi, Georgia.

The objective of the initiative is to train Adjara-based media professionals on gender and gender sensitive reporting in order to strengthen capacities of journalists, raise their awareness on the issues of gender equality, domestic violence and women’s rights and promote a new approach to media portrayal of women and man in public life in Georgia.

Representatives of local media organizations, including TV, radio and print media, with the track record of reporting on social issues and human rights are selected to participate in the training. Trainings will be conducted by UNFPA invited experts on gender and media issues. Upon completion of the training course, participants will be awarded with UNFPA certificates.

Ms. Tamar Khomasuridze, UNFPA assistant representative: “The training on gender reporting for media professionals is held within the framework of partnership initiatives marking the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Through enhanced interaction and dialogue with media professionals, UNFPA advocates for gender equality, equity and empowerment of women. Although the situation has improved in recent years, women’s rights issues remain of a priority importance, especially in the regions, where patriarchal traditions are dominant. Therefore, working with media is crucial in order to advance a gender vision within the media and promote equal relationships and gender-based violence free environment in Georgia.”

Within the framework of the initiative, Q&A with Ms. Lali Papiashvili, Chair of the Inter-Agency Council on Domestic Violence will be held, where Ms. Papiashvili will brief the journalists about the practical aspects of eliminating domestic violence in Georgia and will share information about recent developments in the field.

Training is held within the framework of UNFPA implemented project “Combating Gender Based Violence in the South Caucasus” (GBV-SC). GBV-SC is a multi-pronged, 3-year initiative funded by UNFPA and the Government of Norway. The project aims at eliminating gender and domestic violence and empowering women through engendering laws, raising public awareness, policies and plans, supporting service mechanisms to prevent and protect acts of gender-based violence and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of efforts aiming at addressing GBV in Georgia.
