July 10, 2008 (Tbilisi, Georgia) – The launch and the office opening of the new UNFPA implemented project “Combating Gender Based Violence in the South Caucasus” (GBV-SC) will be held at the Business Centre located on Kostava street 47/57 on July 10th 5 pm.

The project is co-funded by the United Nations Populations Fund and the Royal Government of Norway and is a first region-wide project contributing to the eradicating domestic violence (DV) in the countries of the South Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. GBV-SC will be implemented in close cooperation with the key government entities, NGOs, and academia.

GBV-SC will use a multi-pronged approach to combat GBV by raising public awareness, engendering laws and policies, supporting capacity building on national and local levels and establishing national coordination and monitoring mechanisms among all actors working on DV. Within the framework of the project, the countrywide qualitative and quantitative surveys on the causes and consequences of GBV and DV will be launched in 2008. Surveys will be carried out by companies selected on competetive basis. Survey findings will be used for formulation of appropriate national policies and plans to combat domestic violence and will contribute to increased awareness among the public on gender issues and rights.

Head of the UNFPA Georgia office Ms. Tamar Khomasuridze will make an opening speech. The official launch will be followed by a reception. Vice-chairman of Parliament Giorgi Tsereteli, Public Defender Mr. Sozar Subari, deputy Ministers of Healthcare, Labour and Social Affairs Mr. Nikoloz Fruidze, Mr. Irakli Giorgobiani and Ms Manan Jebashvili, Deputy State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Ms. Tamar Beruchashili and other governmental officials are invited to attend the event. Other guests include representatives of the international organizations and local NGOs active in the field of domestic violence.
